Project Manager Dr Ibrahim Waheed met with the Addu City
Council. Addu City’s protected marine area has been selected for a groundbreaking
pilot to be undertaken by the D’MADD project. The pilot is envisioned to produce
a 3D digital map of the selected areas of the reef system.
The data collected will be a game-changer for both the local
council and the government, providing invaluable insights. Given the crucial
role Maldivian reef systems play in safeguarding the islands, this ambition
pilot is a significant leap forward. It showcases the power of digital
technology in understanding and preserving our vital ecosystems.
Successful completion of the pilot will be a historic first
for the Maldives. With the knowledge transfer of technology and mapping
methods, will enable government organizations to Map the Maldivian shores
faster and effectively at lower costs compared to diving and other forms of
manual mapping.
Furthermore, attention can be given to the health and growth
of the reef system with the baseline data collected from the pilot, enhancing
the conservation efforts.
Addu City Mayor Mr Ali Nizar, Deputy Mayor Mr Mohamed
Shuaau, Councillor Ibrahim Shinaz and Councillor Ahmed Seed participated in the
meeting.
