D’MADD conducts a stakeholder consultation
workshop for the Digital Identity and Services bill today. The workshop was
conducted in collaboration with international experts from the
Telecommunications Management Group (TMG), the company tasked with crafting
the bill.
Over 60 participants from 27
organizations joined the workshop that took place in Barcelo Nasandhura. These
include Government Ministries, Authorities, and Agencies, as well as finance,
telecom, transportation, and the IT Sector, from both business and
Non-Governmental Organisations.
In the introductory remarks, Dr Waheed briefed
the participants about the components of the D’MADD project and how the components,
from digital communication to digital identification, establish the necessary
foundations in the digital transformation of the Maldives. He assured that the workshop
aims to educate participants about digital identity, the current status of the
Maldives' digital identity, and guide them in providing informed feedback. The
consultants will note the participants’ concerns, opinions and experience and
will be considered whilst drafting the bill.
During the workshop, Mr. Daniel Leza
(Legal Expert/Team Leader), Dr. Ted Dunston (Digital Development Expert), and
Uz. Hassan Maaz Shareef (Local Legal Expert) participated from the TMG team,
guided the participants about digital identity, focusing on technology,
governance and international best practice. They conducted a series of
exercises to assess the participants' understanding of the subject and the
feedback once a topic has been explained. The team fielded many questions
ranging from technology, implementation, governance and even local legislative barriers.
The participants showed keen interest,
and the interactive workshop had to continue over the allocated time to gather
as much input as possible before the drafting of the bill begins.
